Understanding ukulele tuning
Unlike most string instruments, a standard ukulele is re-entrant: its first G string is higher than the C string beside it. This close pitch range gives strummed chords their recognizable sparkle.
Chord shapes are compact and beginner friendly. Practise moving between two shapes slowly before adding a steady down-up rhythm.

- Switch between C and Am
- Add F to make a three-chord loop
- Count four downstrokes
- Alternate down and up strokes

Frequently asked questions
Why is the first ukulele string high?
Standard re-entrant tuning uses a high G4, then C4, E4 and A4. The pitch order creates the ukulele’s bright, compact sound.
Which ukulele chords should beginners learn first?
C, Am, F and G are an excellent starting group because they unlock many simple progressions.
Can I use low G tuning?
Yes. Select the low G option to hear G3 instead of the standard re-entrant G4.
