A standard piano has 88 keys: 52 white keys and 36 black keys. They cover just over seven octaves, from the lowest A (A0) to the highest C (C8). Grand, upright and full-size digital pianos all have 88. Portable keyboards usually have 61 keys, and some have 49 or 76.
Knowing the number is the easy part. What actually helps a beginner is understanding the pattern behind those 88 keys, because once you see it, you can find any note in seconds.
How many keys on different pianos and keyboards
| Instrument | Keys | White | Black | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand piano | 88 | 52 | 36 | A0 to C8 |
| Upright piano | 88 | 52 | 36 | A0 to C8 |
| Full-size digital piano | 88 | 52 | 36 | A0 to C8 |
| Stage or compact digital piano | 76 or 73 | 45 (on 76) | 31 (on 76) | About 6¼ octaves |
| Portable keyboard (most common in India) | 61 | 36 | 25 | 5 octaves, C to C |
| Small keyboard | 49 | 29 | 20 | 4 octaves, C to C |
| Mini keyboards and controllers | 25–37 | varies | varies | 2–3 octaves |
| Concert grands with extended bass (rare) | 92 or 97 | — | — | Extra low notes below A0 |
A common myth online says baby grands have fewer keys. They don’t. A baby grand is a shorter grand piano, but it still has 88 keys.
The pattern that makes 88 keys easy
The piano repeats the same group of 12 keys from bottom to top: 7 white keys and 5 black keys. Each group is an octave.
Look at the black keys. They come in alternating groups of two and three. That pattern is your map:
- The white key just to the left of any pair of black keys is C.
- The white key just to the left of any group of three is F.
Find one C and you can name every key around it.
Piano key names: white keys, black keys and sargam
White keys use the letters A to G, then repeat. Black keys take their name from the white key next to them: the black key just right of C is C sharp (C#), which is also called D flat (Db) because it sits just left of D. Every black key has two names like this.
If you learn Indian music or sing, you’ll know these as sargam. On a keyboard, most teachers set Sa on C:
| Key | Colour | Western name | Sargam (Sa = C) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | White | C | Sa |
| 2 | Black | C# / Db | Komal Re |
| 3 | White | D | Re |
| 4 | Black | D# / Eb | Komal Ga |
| 5 | White | E | Ga |
| 6 | White | F | Ma |
| 7 | Black | F# / Gb | Tivra Ma |
| 8 | White | G | Pa |
| 9 | Black | G# / Ab | Komal Dha |
| 10 | White | A | Dha |
| 11 | Black | A# / Bb | Komal Ni |
| 12 | White | B | Ni |
Sa can sit on any key, not just C. Singers often move Sa to suit their voice. But for learning the keyboard, starting Sa on C keeps everything on the white keys.
Notice there’s no black key between E and F, or between B and C. Those pairs are only a half step apart, so they don’t need one. That gap is what creates the two-and-three pattern.
Middle C and octave numbers
Middle C is the C closest to the centre of the keyboard, usually right in front of the brand name on an acoustic piano. On an 88-key piano it’s the 40th key from the left.
Musicians number octaves so every key has a unique name. The octave starts on C, so middle C is C4, the D above it is D4, and so on up to B4. The next C is C5. The lowest key on a full piano is A0 and the highest is C8.
On a 61-key keyboard, middle C is the third C from the left. If your keyboard has a display, it may label it as C3 or C4. Brands differ, so trust the position, not the label.
Is a 61-key keyboard enough for a beginner?
For most beginners in their first year or two, yes. Five octaves cover nearly all beginner songs, Bollywood melodies, chords with the left hand and melody with the right. That’s why 61-key keyboards are such a popular first instrument.
Move to 88 keys when:
- you want to learn classical piano or take graded piano exams, which use pieces that span the full keyboard;
- your pieces start running off either end of the keyboard;
- you want weighted keys that feel like an acoustic piano. Most 61-key keyboards have light, unweighted keys, which makes the jump to a real piano feel heavy.
If you’re choosing between a 61-key keyboard and an 88-key digital piano, think about the music you want to play in two years, not next month. Not sure which instrument suits you at all? Read which instrument a beginner should learn first.
How to label piano keys (and when to stop)
Labels help in your first few weeks. They also become a crutch if you leave them on too long. Here’s how to do it properly:
- Use removable labels only: small stickers made for keys, washi tape, or a printed note strip that sits behind the keys. Never use permanent marker, and avoid strong glue on an acoustic piano.
- Label one octave, not all of them. Start with the octave from middle C (C4) up to B4. You’ll work out the rest from the pattern.
- Label white keys only. Name the black keys from their neighbours instead.
- Add sargam if it helps. Writing “C / Sa” on middle C ties the two systems together from day one.
- Remove the labels after two to four weeks. Take them off one at a time, starting with C and F, because the black-key pattern already tells you where those are.
On a 61-key keyboard, use the same approach with the middle octave. On an 88-key piano, some teachers also mark every C with a small dot until the student can find them by the black keys alone.
Why does a piano have 88 keys?
Early pianos in the 1700s had around four to five octaves. As composers wrote lower and higher music, makers kept extending the range. By the late 1800s, makers such as Steinway had settled on 88 keys, and the industry followed.
The practical reason it stopped there is your ears. Notes far below A0 sound more like a rumble than a pitch, and notes far above C8 sound like thin clicks. Eighty-eight keys covers almost everything written for the piano, which is why it remains the standard today.
